Early history of the Bahai faith in the Solomon Islands. |

The Bahai Faith was introduced to the Solomon Islands on 1st march 1954 by Alvin and Getrude Blum who were accompanied by their daughter, Keithie.They left the United States in 1947 for New Zealand. In 1953 a global crusade it spread the teachings of Baha’u’llah was initiated and the Blums responded by setting sail for the Solomon islands arriving on the vessel,MV Malaita.It was at this time that twelve other pacific also had Bahai’s arriving on their shores to share the Bahai Faith.
Alvin Gertrude saw many opportunities to assist the growing township of Honiara and to earn living. Mr. Bill Gina from Western Province was the first Solomon Islander to enroll as a Bahai.Mr.John Mills, an Australian was the second. Several other Solomon Islanders declared their believe in Baha’u’llah,but it was Hamuel Hoahania from Hauhui village in West Are Are,Malaita Province who become the champion of the Cause.Hamuel was a “medical Dresser” who traveled widely and taught the Bahai Faith as he went around the different areas tending to the sick. Soon there were Bahai Communities established in West Are’ Are, Lau lagoon, Langa Langa lagoon, Auki and West Kwaio. Tawaimare School was established in Malaita in 1957 and one in Langalanga Lagoon in 1968 and both continued to operate until 1975 when the Government took over the administration of all religions schools in the Country.
In 1971 the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahais of Solmon Islands, the national administrative body, was formed from more than 25 Local Spiritual Assemblies. Since then these Local administrative assemblies continue to grow and develop and the Bahais can be found in all province of Solomon Islands. Currently, there are 57 communities where Bahais reside in the Country. What do the Baha’is Believe?
Bahais believe that there is only one God, the Creator of the Universe. Through out history, God has revealed Himself to humanity through a series of divine Messengers-each of whom was the Founder of a great religion. This succession of of the divine Teachers reflects as single historic” plan of God” for educating humanity about its Creator and for the cultivating the spiritual, intellectual and moral capacities of the entire human race. The goal of this process of the progressive divine revelation is to prepare for the establishment of a world civilization based on equality and justice for all human beings. The ever expanding knowledge of God ‘s Will for humanity to bring about truly global society was revealed over 140 years ago by Baha’u’llah,who is the Latest of these divine Manifestations. The Bahai Faith upholds the Unity of God (there is only one God known us many different names) recognizes the unity of His prophets (all prophets are of God); and calculates the principles of oneness and wholesome of the entire human race. It proclaims the necessity and the inevitability of the unification of mankind and, assets that it is gradually approaching. It claims that nothing short of the transmuting spirit of God, working through His chosen Mouthpiece in this day, can ultimately succeed in bringing it about. The Bahai Faith enjoins upon its followers the primary duty of an unfettered search after truth; condemns all manner of prejudice and superstition; declares the purpose of religion to be the promotion of amity and concord among people; proclaims the essential harmony of science and religion and recognizes it as the foremost agency for the pacification and the orderly progress of human society.
Baha’u’llah taught about the principle of equal rights in opportunities and privileges for men and woman. He wrote about the necessity for universal compulsory education; about elimination extremes of poverty and wealth; about abolishing the institution pf priesthood; about prohibition slavery and asceticism; about having monogamy; about discouraging divorce; about emphasizing the necessity of strict obedience to one’s government; about exalting any work performed in the spirit of service to the level of worship; about creation of an auxiliary international language; delineation of the outlines of those institution that must establish and perpetuate the general peace of mankind In summary, Bahais believe that peace is not only an attainable goal but is inevitable. It will come about when there is implementation of the principles stated by Baha’u’llah.
